This is the oldest Division of the Laboratory. It deals with chemical analyses, mechanical tests, metallographic testing of both finished and semi-finished metallurgical products, supporting companies in quality control, research and development activities. It is also equipped for the preparation of test tubes for mechanical tests.Its activity extends to the field of CND controls, weld qualification, and failure analysis. It specializes in tests for the characterization of plastic materials, composite materials, rubbers, and accelerated aging tests, according to international and national regulations.
It is qualified for the testing of automotive details and paint checks.


Quantitative and qualitative chemical analyses, using both the traditional quantometer method or X-ray fluorescence, and wet chemistry analysis, by means of an ICP plasma source, on:

  • all types of steel and cast iron
  • all aluminium, magnesium, titanium, lead/antimony, and zinc alloys
  • brass and bronzes
  • foundry and sintered slag

Complete traditional and wet chemistry analyses on metallic and non-metallic materials from carbon to uranium.

Determination of the composition of metal fillings such as zinc, tin, and chromium.


  • Tensile with or without strain gauge, bending
  • Hardness testing HBW - HRC - HRA - HRB - HRT - HRN - HV, hardness with portable durometer, Shore A and Shore D hardness, HV hardness with loads from 1 g to 2 Kg
  • Thicknesses of surface treatments
  • Jominy hardenability with curve
  • Impact testing with Charpy and Izod pendulum, according to UNI and ASTM, up to 450 kJ
  • Bends on welded and non-welded tubes, fractures on welded beads
  • Contamination tests on mechanical parts according to specifications
  • Dehydrogenation on galvanically coated parts

Mechanical tests may be carried out on metallic materials and on non-metallic materials, plastics, composites, welding heels.


Microscopic examinations complete with interpretation of microstructures, eventual technical report and digitalized microscopic documentation.

  • Determination of austenitic grain size, evaluation of non-metallic inclusions, classification of graphite in cast irons, measurement of depth of surface decarburization, chemical characterization of surface layers
  • Analysis of the fracture with an electron microscope, and precise analysis using a microprobe

Macroscopic examinations aimed at determining the causes of rupture, complete with digitalized macroscopic documentation.

Root cause failure analisys, using an electron microscope with EDS microprobe in order to determine the cause of the failure.


In the event that a customer is not able to provide a specimen of the material to be analysed, it is possible to perform (internally and/or externally) all the processes to obtain tensile and impact test specimens, and specimens for chemical analysis.


We can provide consultancy and perform the tests for qualifying welding of any kind thanks to the equipment available in the Laboratory and to our staff, who has gained experience in companies in various industries and has validated their knowledge by obtaining the “International Welding Technologist” qualification from the Italian Institute of Welding. We are recognized by the main testing bodies, and it is possible to carry out tests in the presence of inspectors.

We are capable of performing these checks either in the laboratory or at the customer’s premises. We employ qualified technicians to perform:

  • magnetic particles (MP)

    We are able to perform the various tests necessary for the characterization of paint products and painting cycles, such as gloss, CIE Lab colour, thickness, adherence with a squaring knife or mandrel, hardness, resistance to shock.


All the tests required by standards can be performed on plastic or composite materials,in order to determine:

  • water absorption
  • distortion temperature
  • shore hardness
  • Melt Flow Index
  • and resistance:

  • to stains
  • to chemical agents
  • to immersion in water
  • to thermal changes
  • and others on request.


We have an area of the laboratory dedicated to performing component contamination tests according to the main industry regulations (ISO 16232, ISO 18413, etc.). The test can be carried out with the aid of a machine specifically designed for this type of testing, with forced and controlled air flow so as to minimize external contamination by even the smallest particles (ISO 14644-1 Class 5 ). The washing fluid undergoes double filtration at 0.2 micron. The dimensions of the chamber and the metal support grid for the samples make it possible to easily test components even of great size and weight, collecting the washing fluid directly on the filtering membrane.


Salt spray: we can perform accelerated corrosion tests with salt spray (NSS), acetic acid salt spray (AASS) and copper acetic acid salt spray (CASS), on electrolytic coatings, on painted parts, on stainless steel, according to current regulations (ASTM, DIN, UNI).

Aging tests: we can perform accelerated exposure tests using Xenon lamps or UV ray exposure.

Humidostatic chamber/thermal cycles: we can determine the resistance of paints and other types of coatings, according to current regulations.

We perform the tests required by the regulations of the various car manufacturers for the qualification of the components, both on specimens and finished parts.
